I know that there are a lot of regional sayings and phrases in different areas. Many of you probably think of Canadians saying “eh” a lot (and yes..sometimes I catch myself saying it..but not THAT often really!)
There’s one saying that I’ve never heard in person, though, that I just don’t get, and wondering if it can be explained to me? I’ve only seen it used in books and people online who are in the states, so I’m guessing it’s an American thing? Or maybe just some places in the US? Either way, here it is.
I could care less.
Which I knew from the context it is always used in to mean that the person saying it doesn’t care at all about whatever. But the words literally mean that they do care a bit, because it’s possible to care less.I guess I’m just a very literal person, because it never made sense to me. In fact, for years I tried to correct the people who said this because it just doesn’t make sense to me (and I’m in no way trying to insult anyone in the US…really!)
In Canada, we say “I couldn’t care less.”
Which to me seems to make more sense. Because we’re saying that we care so little about whatever that we, well, couldn’t care any less.
Just my thoughts…Funny how some sayings and phrases get going I guess!
Does anyone have a saying they’ve heard that just doesn’t make sense to you? Please share!
