Hi everyone! This is Louis, the programmer-since-high-school, husband to my wonderful wife Savannah.
I’ve been working a great deal on our favorite homeschooling mom’s blog, and I have to say, SEO and overall page optimization was severely lacking! I was especially surprised considering that Blogger is hosted by Google and that you’d think, as a big search engine, blogger would have been SEO friendly, not so!
First thing to understand when it comes to SEO, is what it’s not. There are many people out there who would get you to believe that changing a few lines of code, adding a few image texts and specializing your anchor text (links) is enough for anyone, but that’s not the entire story.
There are also those out there who would have your URL submitted to thousands of search engines, spam the net on every site that allows comment with your link and exchange sites with every “network” out there to expose you will also increase your ranking. This is what we call Black Hat SEO and it’s really bad. You’ll get a high ranking for about a month, and when the search engines crawl you again (with what we call spiders, specially designed programs that read your site) you’ll lose your rank, be deemed as a “bad” site and spend the next 6 months starting over with the added bonus of having to “convince” search engines that you’re not a bad person. (PS: During these 6 months, you’ll probably not exist to search engines, at all) – Stay away from these people, they’re bad news and not worth the time, money, or aggravation!
The last fact is that Search Engine Algorithms are always changing, modifying their programs and ranking people for different reasons. This means, there’s no sure fire way to gain ranking, exposure or traffic 100% of the time on 100% of the search engines. This will also mean that many subjects regarding SEO may true one day, false the next and debated for many years to come and you’ll never really be ahead of the game. It’s a constant struggle that all SEO Professionals will endure, and it’s great job security!
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is essentially marketing combined with good programming practices and social interaction. You are selling your site to search engines through a variety of methods, including backlinks, social media, keywords, code and other services to market on search engines such as Google AdWords, as well as listing your site in places people might find you.
By combining the various tips and techniques to come, you should be able to analyze your site’s performance, manage it’s exposure and optimize all the details necessary to have search engines crawl your site quickly, and in a friendly way that causes those big names like Google, Yahoo!, AOL, MSN, Ask, etc to trust your site and go up in Rank on various scales of the internet.
Keep in mind though, that Rank is not the primary purpose of SEO. Even low ranking sites can have amazing traffic, and that’s what matters. Without traffic, people won’t buy products, read articles or pay any real attention. However, with great traffic, you’ll have the ear of potentially thousands of people to tell them whatever you have to say.
I look forward to sharing all these principles with you and giving away a free analysis on every post to those who win the giveaways.
