“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Prov. 22:6
We’ve all heard this one. And it’s a verse that people who are trying to disprove the credibility of the Bible love using. After all, what about all those pastor’s kids who rebel? All the young men and women who are raised in good Christian homes but stray from their faith?
Max Lucado’s book Cure for the Common Life explained this verse in a whole new way that’s totally changed my way of thinking.
“Be careful with this verse. Don’t interpret it to mean “If I put my kids on the right path, they’ll never leave it. If I fill them full of Scripture and Bible lessons and sermons, they may rebel, but they’ll eventually return.”
The proverb makes no such promise…The phrase “train up” descends from a root word that means to develop a thirst. Hebrew midwives awakened the thirst of a newborn by dipping a finger in a bowl of crushed dates and placing it in the baby’s mouth. To “train up,” then, means to awaken thirst.” ~~ Cure for the Common Life, Max Lucado
Wow! That puts me on a whole new mommy-mission! Yes, it’s important to teach kids about the Bible and God and His Promises and Commandments. But doing that alone isn’t going to keep my children on the right track. How do I make them THIRST for God? What a responsibility!
Luckily Thankfully, my God is a God who knows what He’s doing! He gave me my children knowing that I am capable of this task!
How can I make sure that I awaken a thirst for God in my kids? How do I make sure that they depend on Him, not themselves? By example of course!
Ever since I read that passage in Lucado’s book, I’ve been trying to figure out what I’m supposed to do. And the best thing I can come up with is show them that Mommy and Daddy need and desire God, too! Go figure, God is sneaking in lessons for me in all of this too (a sly one, He is.)
So my mission, should I choose to accept it? Openly depend on God every day, everywhere, so that my children will realize that even parents who can do (almost) anything need God too.
And if I get this right With God, I can accomplish this and be assured that my children will not depart from the path they should take.
