The blood, sweat and tears involved in home schooling begs the question: why bother? It is much easier to send our children to public school—let the system deal with the stress. Is all the time, effort and sacrifice really worth it? Home school makes sense with the bigger picture clearly in view. What can we learn about home schooling from Socrates, Michelangelo, Einstein, and even Usain Bolt? What useful insights are hidden in Jesus’ parables about business and farming. While exploring unique perspectives and untapped possibilities, this book expands the horizons of home schooling while at the same time giving innovative learning solutions.
I’ll be honest; at first glance I wasn’t all that into the idea of reading yet another “reasons to home school” style of book. After all, we (my family) already have our reasons to home school and are more than happy to keep our children at home. However, I decided to go for it after reading the book summary. I’m glad I did.
One of the appealing factors of this book is that it’s not long. After all, we moms are busy. An informative but quick read is a good thing. That doesn’t mean that the book is lacking, though.
Home School: Why Bother? clearly and concisely covers the advantages of homeschooling. This book isn’t public-school bashing; it’s very matter of fact.
Dahl, who home educated his own children, helps parents to look ahead at the end goal they have for their children. He then discusses how home schooling helps steer children toward those goals in a more practical, complete, and individualized manner than can be obtained in a large classroom. He also talks about the importance of family and faith, which are frequently major contributors to a parent’s decision to keep their children home.
Leslia Dahl doesn’t just say “here’s why home schooling works” and leaves it at that; he also helps parents home school effectively. Home School: Why Bother? includes tips such as to go slow and have fun, and reminds us that everyone makes mistakes; this is Okay! It’s how we learn.
I think that this is a great resource for all parents, even if they aren’t necessarily planning on home schooling but are looking at all options.
