I saw sidewalk paint for sale at several stores and was intrigued, but I’m glad I didn’t buy any because I found a SUPER easy recipe to make your own! How easy? So easy that I didn’t even have time to take photos of the process because it was over too quickly!
Just mix together 1 part cornstarch with 1 part water, then add a few drops of food colouring! For my two, I mixed up 1/3 cup each of cornstarch and water, then divided it into 2 little bowls. The kids then got to pick what colour they wanted. This made just enough paint to entertain them for 15-20 minutes and not have any paint leftover to have to store.
For several months I’ve been wanting to try making laundry detergent, but I couldn’t find washing soda anywhere! Well, I finally found it on Friday, so yesterday I made the laundry soap. I used the recipe for liquid detergent found on the Duggar’s website. Here’s how I made it!
What You Need:
– 1 bar soap (I used Ivory)
– 4 cups hot tap water
– 1 cup washing soda (can not be baking soda..must be sodium carbonate)
– 1/2 cup borax
What You Do:
First, grate the soap. I used a hand grater. I realized after several minutes that the food processor probably would have worked, but at that point I didn’t want to drag it out, then have to wash both grater and food processor later, so I stuck with the hand grater. It didn’t take too long to grate the soap though, just a few minutes.
Next, put soap and the 4 cups of hot water in a saucepan and stir on med-low heat until soap is all melted and dissolved. This took my about 15 mins I think.
Fill up a 5 gallon bucket with hot water, then mix in the soap-water, the borax, and the washing soda.
Stir well until all powder is dissolved. My son helped with this step for about 30 seconds..then I think he realized that this wasn’t a recipe he could eat from, and he lost interest. I love kids 🙂
Cover the bucket and let sit overnight to thicken. The next day, stir, then fill up empty and cleaned laundry detergent dispensing jugs 1/2 way, and fill them the rest of the way with water. Shake before each use.
Makes 10 gallons.
Top loading machine – use 5/8 cups per load (approx. 180 loads)
Front loading machine – use 1/4 cup per load (approx. 640 loads)
**Update: I made a change or two when I made this for the 2nd time. I didn’t dilute the detergent when putting it into the laundry soap jugs (since I can fit more soap into the jugs this way, I don’t have to actually fill them up as often). I also found this helped it to stay gelled better.
