I can hardly believe that it’s already been just over 3 weeks! I kept meaning to write up a birth story post and every time I had my hands free I forgot.
Zachariah John was born February 9 at 2:08am, weighing 9lbs.
My last several labours were quick (between 1 hour and 45 minutes and 2.5 hours) but I still wasn’t prepared for how quickly little Zach came! There really isn’t too much to tell because there wasn’t for much “birth story” to happen!
The night before he was born I had been feeling crampy with a few random slightly-stronger-than-Braxton-Hicks contractions but nothing that I hadn’t been feeling for weeks already. I woke up around midnight and couldn’t get comfortable to fall asleep again (I’m usually a stomach sleeper so sleeping during pregnancy just doesn’t work well for me at the end) and got up around 12:30 to use the bathroom. I started having some real contractions that weren’t awful but definitely doing something around 1am, and woke my husband up around 1:30 or so. By that time, I’d really only had maybe 5-7 contractions. He brought the midwife’s supply bag out and called her at 1:48 (I only know this because of his phone’s time stamp!)…I had one contraction while he spoke to her but then I was able to talk to her for a few minutes and she said later that I didn’t sound close at all. Contractions were lasting under a minute and while they weren’t fun, they were bearable.
However, she knew that I have a history of fast labours so she said she’d get dressed and come over. She lives just under 20 minutes away.
(Funny little side-note…the midwife who delivered my last baby (Melanie) was the secondary midwife on call and she was actually spending the night at the midwife’s (Ashley) house who came because she didn’t have childcare for her son if she got called out in the night..that way, if they both had to leave, Ashley’s husband would be home and could get her son off to school in the morning. The two of them had been talking about me the night before and Mel has told Ashley that “if Savannah pages you, don’t waste time getting there..she’ll go quickly.”)
After we had called Ashley, I had to use the bathroom again. About 10 minutes later I had a couple of contractions that hurt quite a bit and I felt a bit pushy so I pushed a bit and my water broke. And then I pushed a bit more and the head was out! I called out “HUN!” and my husband came, thinking I just needed help getting up off the toilet or something…He wasn’t expecting to see what he walked into!
I tried to get myself in a position where baby wouldn’t fall into the toilet (wouldn’t that be a tale to tell later?) and a few seconds and a small push later, Zachariah was out! I rubbed him down a bit to get him to clear his airways while hubby dug through the midwife supplies for the snot sucker, and then he called the midwife back to let her know the baby was here…it had been barely 20 minutes since we’d talked to her and she was still about 10 minutes away! So from the time of the first painful contractions to when Zach was born was just barely over an hour!
Because of how quickly Zachariah came and how big he was, I needed some stitches after so recovery was slower this time than my last several births but I’m a lot more comfortable now and we’re getting back into a routine slowly. The kids all adore him.
Zachariah is gaining well. He went down to 8lbs 6oz within a few days after the birth but is well past his birth weight at 9lbs 12oz as of last Wednesday. He’s adorable and has lots of hair!
