I’ve been wanting a yarn winder for quite a while to make center pull yarn cakes, but was put off with all of the reviews on the cheapest one Amazon has. Many of the reviews were great but all of the not-great ones had the same complain; the yarn guide falls down.
Eventually I decided to go for it. A friend had bought it and liked it. I wasn’t willing to spend on one of the more expensive winders. And I wondered if maybe the issues people had were due to user-error rather than a problem with the actual product.
And I haven’t had an issue at all! However, I do understand where people are having their difficulties with the winder.
The problem is that the yarn guide feels like it’s pulled out all the way before it actually is. It took me a few minutes to figure it out because I was afraid of breaking the yarn guide if I pulled too hard because it did really feel like it was out all the way, but I finally gave it a firm tug and it came out a bit farther and locked upright! When it’s fully out, mine has the guide about 1.5 inches from the red plastic piece.
I’ve clamped it onto tables of different thicknesses without trouble. It hasn’t left a mark, even on one table top that was painted and I worried it would scratch.
You thread the end of the yarn through the hole in the guide, put it in the groove on top of the winder, and you’re ready. I do need to hold the yarn while I wind it or it will be too loose and will loop around the bottom of the winder but it’s still really easy and I can wind a 50g ball in just a few minutes.
I can’t guarantee that every yarn winder with those reviews are just like this one but they looked identical in the pictures so hopefully they are all the same. I hope this helps!
