A couple of weeks ago we ran out of hot chocolate.
I’ve seen several recipes for homemade hot chocolate floating around online so I thought this was the perfect time to try one. Moreover, homemade hot chocolate makes a great Christmas gift.
I used this recipe that I saw on Life In a Shoe blog as a base and picked up the ingredients needed when hubby and I got a date-day while Grandma baby-sat the kids.
- 20 oz non-dairy creamer powder
- 32 oz powdered milk
- 1 1/2 lbs dry chocolate milk mix
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup cocoa
- crushed candy cane
When we were at the bulk food store I saw that there was a bin of crushed candy canes. Perfect 🙂 Now we get the yummy candy cane taste without the sticky fingers that come with stirring a candy cane into the hot chocolate. Fewer sticky fingers mean Mommy isn’t washing the walls as often. 🙂
The kids helped me measure out the ingredients and stir them up.
There was the added homeschool factor of using a scale to weigh ingredients, and fine motor control while balancing cups on the scale.
Yummy bits of candy cane goodness! I didn’t measure how much crushed candy I put in..I just kept adding and stirring it in until it seemed well distributed.
Getting ready for the taste testing….Please, don’t judge me by the state of my table…we did just finish mixing a lot of fluffy powdery substances in a barely-big-enough bowl…
It’s a keeper..at least some of it is. Some of it will be gifted.
