I knew from the start that it would take a while for things to run smoothly as we start really getting into homeschooling. I was very sporadic doing preschool with Tobi last year but this year I want to get into a routine so that we can learn more and make better use of our time.
I didn’t expect our day to get bumpy before we even started though!
I tried spending some extra alone time with Josiah before getting started so that he would hopefully be more content to play alone while the rest of us did school. It didn’t really work.
I decided to buy some time and make a special breakfast; cocoa waffles, using my homemade biscuick/baking mix. They turned out very yummy!

Trying to fit in a big bite!

Josiah was still grumpy, so the kids watched a cartoon and then I brought out their (not) back-to-school gift bags. There was nothing really new in them (I like that they’re young enough I can get away with that still!) They each got a pencil case I had stashed away a while ago with some crayons (I tried to pick out barely-used ones), a ruler, a glue stick, a pencil and eraser, and a dry erase marker. They also each got some stickers and some fuzzy Cars colouring cards. Tobi got a dry erase I Spy book, and Annie got a colouring book. They dug into their bags so fast I couldn’t get a clear photo!

Annabel loved her new stickers so much she had to give them a hug!

I don’t think Tobi noticed that the gift bag I used for his present was the same for last year’s first day gift…
Immediately after their gifts were opened, disaster struck. Josiah grabbed Annie’s stickers from her..

And then I gave them back.

I didn’t get everything done that I had planned. We read the story of the week, Hurry Up, Franklin. We did our calender board and memory verse (I’ll post more about all of this later this week in the “all in a day” post I’m planning on.)
We worked on reading analog clocks and matching the time to digital time. Then Tobi wrote out what time the clocks said.

We made a list of different animals that are slow and animals that are fast on our easel chalkboard. For journaling/handwriting, Tobi picked an animal from each list, copied the name of it, and drew a picture of it. He did a great job and was so proud of himself!

All in all, the day morning was a success. It didn’t go super smoothly but I had expected that. I know that over time things will go better and I will be able to add more to our day.
