At the beginning of the school year, my husband and I joined a local homeschooling group. We were able to chat online with a few members and learn from them, but since I didn’t have a vehicle during the day, we couldn’t take part in any of the events.
Now that we have a new (to us) van, we can start to actually meet the others in the group!
On Tuesday, the homeschooling group arranged for a nearby reptile zoo to come and show all the kids some of their animals. So we ate lunch and headed to a park about 1/2 hr from us. Because we live in a rural area, the homeschooling group includes families from all different parts of the county; we all have to be willing to drive a little to a central place!
The kids were able to see several different animals, such as turtles, tortoises, snakes, a tarantula, a scorpion, and lizards. They learned a few interesting facts about them all. For instance, did you know that a tree frog drinks water from its bum? We didn’t..until Tuesday!
Some of the animals were not to be touched, but the kids could get their hands on (gently!) a few of them! Annie touched one of the snakes — she was too quick for me to take a photo in time! Tobi touched the tortoise.
I was a bit concerned about how well my active 4 yr old would be able to sit and listen for a whole hour, but he did very well!
Josiah, on the other hand, got bored rather quickly.
After the animals, it was time to play in the park (which we’d never been to before..it was the best park in our area I’ve seen so far!) and meet some new friends!
