Last year our garden didn’t do very well. We still got lots of zucchini, peppers, cucumber, and tomatoes, but a lot of the seeds and seedlings were eaten by birds and squirrels. Later, agroundhog ate a bunch of my cucumbers.
This year is a very experimental year for us. I think it will take a few posts to describe all that we’re doing! (which is OK, because lately I’ve been having a hard time thinking of post topics.)
Here is our garden this year.
Like I said, pretty much every part of the garden is an experiment.
We’re trying square foot gardening with the raised bed at the front of the garden, and that has several different veggies in it.
I’m trying to grow potatoes for the first time in the old trash can that you can see in the back of the garden. Louis drilled a ton of holes in the bottom for drainage.
We want a lot of cucumbers to pickle this year, so we’re going to try to make them climb up the trellis at the back of the garden to save room.
Each row in the garden has a different combination of soil/fertilizer/manure/compost/peat moss so that we can see what works best.
All in all, we’re growing beets, carrots, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, several kinds of peppers (hot and sweet), cantaloupe, broccoli, peas, green beans, potatoes, and onions. We also have the strawberries and grapes that we planted last year. I’m sure if the grapes will fruit this summer but the strawberries look like they will.
So far things seem to be doing well. A few plants have died, but only 3 or 4. My carrots, peas, potatoes, beets, and cucumber have all sprouted. I’m looking forward to seeing how things turn out this year!
Do you garden? What are you planting this year?
