I don’t know about you, but a baby never cost us that much. Granted, we only have 3. But that’s still more than most people these days. Even with our first when we had to buy everything, we either got it used or given to us. The only new baby gear we got was car seat/stroller combo and a crib mattress.
We’ve probably still spent less than $40 on new clothes for all 3 kids because we get everything used or handed down. I feel so bad for the parents. Now they likely feel stressed and pressured to make even MORE money (compared to us, their income seems HUGE to me), which means they’ll likely get to spend even less time with their child if they start working more hours. Not to mention the unfulfilled desire of wanting more children.
Now, I know that having kids in Canada is a lot different than in the US. Here, we don’t have to pay for most healthcare, including Dr. visits, prenatal care, delivery, etc. Also, families here usually get some sort of government benefits to help with child costs, at least for younger children (for older children as well, depending on income.) Hubby and I joke that the only reason we got our mortgage was because they accepted our child benefits as income. Though it’s not really a joke. And they stopped accepting child benefits as income the next day. But I digress.
I still can’t see how a new baby would add $700 to their expenses, though.
