I’ve been wanting to try making our own baby wipes for a long time, but never got around to it. When I finally decided that Yes, I WILL make them soon, I realized that we needed a container to put them in.
It seemed like it was taking forever for our peanut butter jar to empty, so I decided that I’d have to get some fancy ice cream…One of the types that come in a round, plastic tub instead of a small cardboard box. I got Black Cherry.
I know, poor me.
Go figure, we ended up finishing our peanut butter before I finished the ice cream, but alas, the peanut butter jar was too small so I made myself a small banana split to use up the remaining ice cream.
I know. Poor me.
I was going to take photos, but my camera died just as I was getting started. But really, this is so simple that photos aren’t needed. I’m sure you don’t need a diagram to mix 4 ingredients and pour them into a tub.
I’ve found several recipes for homemade wipes; some contained alcohol, some didn’t. Others contain essential oils, others don’t. This is the recipe I used. I more or less took ideas from a couple of different recipes and put them into my own, though I’m sure many people use this same mixture.
- 2 cups water (I used warm; I figured it would mix better)
- 2 Tbsp baby wash or shampoo
- 2Tbsp baby oil
- 2Tbsp baby lotion
Cut a roll of GOOD QUALITY paper towels in half width-wise, so that you have two narrow rolls of paper towel. Pretty much every site I looked at said only Bounty works. The only Bounty paper towels I could find were decorative ones with pictures of vines on the edges, so I get to wipe bums with pretty wipes.
Put the roll of paper towel into the tub you’re using (can be an ice cream tub or a Rubbermaid one, etc. Whatever you have that fits the paper towels.) Mix your 4 ingredients, and pour the mixture over the paper towels. When the center tube is soaked, it’ll be easy to pull out from the center of the roll.
Close the lid of your container, and turn it upside down a couple of times to make sure everything gets wet. Then cut a large-ish X in the center of the lid (I made each cut about 1 inch.) I found that the corners of the X were too sharp and kept shredding the paper towel, so I cut the points off just a little. Now there is a little square hole in the, center of my lid, and the lines of the X go beyond the hole (if you can picture that. If not, it’s OK. I’m sure however you cut your X will work just fine.)
Pull up the inner-most wipe from the center and feed it through the hole. Pull and tear when needed.
All in all, this took me about 5 minutes. My son conveniently pooped about a 1/2 hour later and the wipes worked very well! They didn’t tear apart on his bum, and they were easy to pull and tear with one hand.
If you want to make reusable wipes, you can use this same soap mixture with your cloth wipes.
Have you ever made your own wipes? Which do you prefer – homemade or store-bought? What recipe did you use?
