Since I’ve started preschool work with my son, I’ve kept things pretty informal. Randomly asking if he wants to do such and such activity, etc. I’ve been feeling very disorganized though, and am never really sure how much we get done in a day, or find myself constantly looking online for new activities for him (a very inefficient use of my time!)
I tried looking through other blogs for schedule ideas for homeschooling a preschooler, and found some good tips. Of course, every child is different and I didn’t find anything that I thought would work perfectly for my son, but I think I was able to create a very flexible schedule and goals that might keep things running more smoothly.
-Do at least 4 planned activities with Tobi every day M-Th
-Do memory verse work every day, even if it’s just repeating it once or twice
-Read with him for at least 30 minutes every day! This is great to help his attention span, pick up new words, and work on picking sight words off the pages as we learn them.
Some days the memory verse work and reading might be included in the 4 activities per day, sometimes not. He’s only 3 after all..it just depends how the day is going!
Friday I’ll use to work on things that he didn’t quite pick up during the week, and just having fun!
I’ll also offer work-packs throughout the day each day if he seems bored, etc.
*Thing to remember!*
Goals don’t HAVE to be met each day! I’d much rather not getting everything done each day but have my son love school, than being able to check off everything on my list but have my son starting to dislike school because of the schedule
To help with time efficiency, I’ll try planning 4 weeks of activities all at once, and getting all printables, etc, that I’ll need at once..less time searching on the computer and more time with my kids! Since Fridays will be the most laid-back, I can use every 4th Friday to plan for the next 4 weeks.
8-9 wake up slowly, have breakfast (the kids usually get up anytime between 6-7:30, but I can dream!)
9-9:30 story or song, then Activity #1
9:30-10 free time
10-10:30 memory verse work then Activity #2
10:30-11 work-pack then Activity #3
11-12:30 free time while I prepare lunch, then eat lunch and clean up
12:30-1 story or song then memory verse
1-1:30 work-pack then Activity #4
Done school goals for the day!
Of course, activities may take longer or shorter than those times, and the spaces in between can be filled with work-packs, free time, or reading..whichever suits the flow of the day best, and Tobi’s attention span. Some things he can only focus on for 3-5 minutes, others he can do for 15-20 minutes!
